In the Joseon Dynasty, there were Yukjo Government Office Street on the left and right sides of the road in front of Gwanghwamun, the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace.
This was the best road in Hanyang leading to the palace, but its meaning has faded over time.
The road was reopened in August 2009. Gwanghwamun Square is a plaza created in the center of Sejong-ro leading to Sejong-ro intersection and Cheonggye Plaza. It houses the statue of King Sejong the Great and the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, which contain the spirit of creativity and practicality. -
